Storage and Deletion of User Data (updated 2024-02-19)

The Jot app uses Google Firebase for storage of users and games.  Once a user is verified through third party services, a unique, one-directional hash is generated as an identifier in the users table.  This hash identifier is used to manage games between users and cannot be used to gain access to any user's private data, including email address, which is only stored by the third party authentication service.  Aside from this hash, only a user's settable nickname, high score, average score, game count, and a list of hash identifiers of players the user would like to block, is stored. Within a game, a single line message can be posted to their opponent which is deleted once viewed.  If posted by mistake, a second empty message can be used to replace the original.  The use of taboo words will block messages from being posted. Note that if a game is not played for 30 days, its data is subject to deletion.

In order to delete your account and any stored data, please follow these steps on the Jot application:

  1. Start up the application (this should show the “Welcome to JOT” screen).
  2. Below you will see three or four key icons.
    1. If three keys, you are already logged in.  Press the PLAY icon to proceed to the “Select a Game Opponent” menu.
    2. If four keys, press LOGIN and use the method used when creating the account.
  3. From the “Select a Game Opponent” screen, select the robot, “JotRussell”, or another player.
  4. This will bring up a game. At the top-left corner, there is a GEAR icon next to your active nickname.  Please press the the GEAR icon.
  5. From this user settings menu, click on the “Delete Account” icon and then “Confirm”.

If you have trouble finding or using this feature, please feel free to send an email with the subject "JOT ACCOUNT DELETION" to from the email associated with the account, and I will check to make sure that your account and data are deleted.  I'll reply back to confirm this action has taken place.

You can, at anytime, delete the account and data managed by the app and the third party services, by logging into the app (via the LOGIN or PLAY buttons), select a game (in the Select a Game Opponent menu), touch the GEAR icon at the top/left part of the game screen, then touch Delete Account and Confirm.  If you have trouble finding or using this feature, please feel free to send an email with the subject "ACCOUNT DELETION" to from the email associated with the account, and I will check to make sure that your account and data are deleted.
